All authors re-write or edit their work - but they are often too close to their precious stories to be able to look at them objectively.

Publishers tend to take a cursory glance at manuscripts that come their way - and there are piles of them - so you need to 'grab' their attention straight away.  If they see badly worded sentences, spelling and punctuation mistakes, it will be tossed aside.
